respirable: (1)The respirable subfraction is that part of the inspirable fraction which deposits in the alveolar region of the lung and which is known to be associated with dust-related diseases such as pneumoconiosis(including silicosis).The version recommended by ISO(1983)is that originally defined by the British Medical Research Council(BMRC 1961).(2)The subfraction which penetrates to and may deposit in the alveolar regions of the lung,and which is known to be associated with dust-related disease such as coal-workers`pneumoconiosis,is referred to as respirable dust.One version is that originally defined by the British Medical Research Council(BMRC 1952),where respirable dust constitutes 50% of inspirable dust for particles with d ae =5 m,falling to zero for particles larger than 7.1 m.The other is the curve recommended by the ACGIH(1985 version)where respirable dust is 50% of the inspirable fraction for particles with d ae =3.5?m.(3)A definition used by some occupational hygienists in Europe for dust which actually deposits in the deep lung is the`alveolar subfraction`.It differs substantially from the the BMRC definition in that the deposition subfraction does not approach 100% for very fine particles,but falls back again to zero,reflecting the fact that,in reality,such particles are exhaled.
